Update: This page will remain at the bottom of This Day in Ireland for the next twelve months or so. It will be updated about once a month with news. Today in Ireland is a chronology of events in Irish history with a focus on recent occurrences. Recent means any time after 1900–that's Irish time. The main focus is on the Troubles. In fact, it was the Troubles that really drove this project from a curiosity to an obsession. Currently, each date has between eight to twelve entries. A few, notably Christmas Day have five or six stories; others have twenty or more. It looks like about three to four new stories are being added each day–that figure translates into about a thousand pages a year.SourcesCredible sources on the web are used as starting points. I am going through each day cleaning things up and adding new pages. I am annotating too. I recently found CAIN Web Service, Conflict Archive on the Internet, and am using that as an anchor. As I go through each date, if it's not discussed on the CAIN Web Service, it's put into limbo. AnnotatingIn a few days, references and sources will start to appear. It's quite time consuming to provide citations for each entry: the problem isn't finding and validating sources, but grabbing books, rummaging through them, then providing the reference. It is being done, but the activity has stopped in favor of getting everything in order from January 1 to December 31. The, starting on December 31, I'll start adding references again. By the time next January 2014 rolls around, everything should be reference. Main SourcesThe main sources for the site, listed alphabetically, are as follows:
The list above is certainly not exhaustive, but I visit these sites a lot; I will update it as I discover other sites that should be added. There's also close to on hundred books on various aspects of Irish history. They won't be listed here, at least not yet, but the entire bibliography will be provided towards the end of the year. More Web PagesObviously, there's a wealth of information on the Troubles and, given the current number of stores, I suspect that, by the time everything's done, the Troubles will take up at least 10,000 pages in the chronology. History from about 1922 to 1968 will likely involve another 5,000; I expect to see about 2,000 pages of information prior to the War of Independence. For Today in Ireland, there are currently about 5,000 pages, so the project is probably about 15% completed. Citations have to be added. Viewing the entire chronologyCurrently, you can't see the entire chronology from January 1 to December 31. I say you because I can see it, but you can't! That shortcoming will be repaired, but not until late April 2013. I want to make sure that the pages are current, accurate and annotated. Then I'll do a quick fix to allow registered users to view anything they want to see. I'll be changing the pages too, giving them a more search engine friendly name; I'll complete that later this year when the latest version of Joomla! is available.
