November 28, 2009: The Taoiseach Brian Cowen responded to the findings of the Murphy Report, which investigated accusations of abuse in the diocese of Dublin. The Murphy Report was issued by the Commission of Investigation Report into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin, which was chaired by Justice Yvonne Murphy. The commission itself is the product of the Commission of Investigation Act 2004, enacted to create a faster and less expensive way for statutory inquiries other than the tribunal method. An Taoiseach stated that "It is a crushing verdict that the good name and standing of the church as an institution was placed above the basic safety of children. Where this was facilitated by servants of the state, it was a betrayal of trust and a complete abandoning of duty." The Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny, called for the resignation of bishops implicated in the report. The report listed five bishops who fell short in their duty to protect children. The Bishop of Limerick, Donal Murray; Jim Moriarty, the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin; Martin Drennan, the Bishop of Galway and two auxiliary bishops in Dublin: Ray Field and Éamonn Walsh.
