Chapter IIIB The Stock Selection Guide—Part 3 What we’re going to coverIn this section, we’re going to look at part 3 of the stock selection guide. Section 2 is an evaluation of management and looks at pretax profit expressed as a percent of sales, and the Return on Equity (ROE) or the return on invested capital; it was discussed in Chapter IIIA. These tools when used together give a great insight into the management of a company. Section 3 is an evaluation of the PE ratio and the dividend yield. These tools feed into section 4 of the SSG when it comes to predicting future stock price behavior. |

Chapter IIIA The Stock Selection Guide—Part 2 What we’re going to cover In this section, we’re going to look at parts 2 and 3 of the stock selection guide. Chapter 3A will look at section2; 3B will examine section 3. Chapter II The Stock Selection Guide—the First Page What we’re going to cover This section is going to focus on the first section of the SSG: the graphical analysis. The company that will be used in this program is Clayton Homes Company (CMH). This company is trade on the NYSE. Clayton Homes has been a popular company among NAIC members: it’s a company whose stock seems to be facing a challenge recently! Clayton Homes (to quote Value Line) is engaged in the manufacture, sale, and financing of low- to medium-priced manufactured homes. No.  So, the question was asked: should I buy gold? Well, look at it this way: when Elizabeth the First reigned, an ounce of gold would buy a man a suit of clothes, a fine pair of shoes and a hearty meal. Today, with Elizabeth the Second reigning supreme, an ounce of gold permits a man to purchase a suit of clothes, a pair of shoes and a Happy Meal. (I don't have access to pricing of women's clothing during the first Elizabethan period--sorry!) Gold just about tracks inflation, but only when it has a run up in price. Gold is, simply put, a terrible investment. Gold will drop in price; it always does. It will drop right back down to under $500 an ounce–it's visited that price many, many times before. When times are uncertain; there are rumors of inflation; currencies weaken; markets do badly: gold climbs again and experts come out of the woodwork proclaiming what a great investment is this precious metal.
In my opinion, gold belongs in your teeth, in electronic circuits, in jewelry or in catalytic converters; it has no place in a serious investment portfolio. |
